When vocalist [Antoinette Montague](https://antoinettemontague.com/?ref=inthewake.tv) sits down with drum legend [Bernard "Pretty" Purdie](https://www.bernardpurdiedrums.com/?ref=inthewake.tv), the reverence in her voice is immediate. She introduces him simply as a "super master drummer"—a title hard-earned across a legendary career spanning more than 4,000 recordings.
Yet, for the man credited with defining the pocket for generations of musicians, the philosophy behind the legacy remains striking in its clarity.
"The key for me is stay, stay, stay focused," Purdie shares. "And that is half the battle."

That steadiness carried him through decades of shaping modern music, from driving the rhythm section behind [Aretha Franklin](https://www.arethafranklin.net/?ref=inthewake.tv) to acting as her bandleader and conductor. Reflecting on Franklin's landmark *Amazing Grace* era, Purdie recalls the deep trust required to step up and "run the whole picture" alongside one of the greatest voices in American history.

While his past holds thousands of iconic studio sessions, Purdie’s heart remains fixed on what comes next. For him, keeping the music alive isn't about looking back—it's about passing the sticks forward.

> "Having the young people to keep it going is something that I hope that will happen," Purdie says. "Just to keep it alive."

Though Purdie was born in Elkton, Maryland, and spent much of his career in New York and New Jersey, he views playing for the Pittsburgh crowd with deep affection.

For Purdie, every city, every stage, and every room filled with people who love the music becomes a home. Whether inspiring a young musician in the crowd or grounding the groove for lifelong fans, he brings decades of warmth, precision, and living history back to the people who give the music its purpose.
