In South Harlem, residents of 1925 Saint Nicholas Avenue and neighboring buildings owned by Sugar Hill Capital are speaking out after years of neglect. From collapsed ceilings and rat infestations to lead exposure and mold, tenants are demanding basic living conditions and accountability.
Organized by the Upper Manhattan Tenants Union, the rally highlights the failure of Sugar Hill and its management company, Choice New York, to make critical repairs—even after official inspections. With 53 rent-stabilized buildings under its control and growing foreclosure pressures, Sugar Hill is accused of exploiting tax breaks and rent laws to displace working-class families.
Tenants like Hamdi Ba and Monique Sullivan share their stories of resilience, resistance, and a powerful rent strike now in its 8th month. This is not just a South Harlem story—it’s a New York housing crisis story.
