Beyond the 24-Hour News Cycle: Reporting with Intention
Because we are a small, independent, and member-funded platform, we know we cannot cover everything. We deeply believe in original reporting from multimedia journalists, and we maintain a small archive of those stories based on our current capacity, rather than the size of our heart.
At IN THE WAKE TV, we do not believe in the 24-hour news cycle designed decades ago. The relentless focus on a 24-hour loop pushes newsrooms to make news instead of report news. This constant pressure disproportionately impacts integrity-based reporting while applying violence to groups who are frequently used as tokens in predominantly white news cycle rundowns. Instead of rushing to fill a feed, we believe in prioritizing actual new events and meaningful new information.
To ensure our communities still receive the vital information they deserve, we intentionally reshare Creative Commons news stories that hold true relevance to Black life. For example, we support the work Democracy Now! is doing and other trusted platforms, and we believe in amplifying their reporting for greater reach and impact.
We curate reporting, essays, research, and cultural commentary from trusted sources to help our audience understand the larger context surrounding local issues. By blending these shared resources with our own storytelling, we are able to document Black life where it is lived while highlighting the relationships that connect communities across regions.
