Carrying the Sound: Celebrating Louis Armstrong’s 125th Birthday

From July 4 through August 4, listeners and communities nationwide are coming together to honor the 125th birthday of Louis Armstrong. Known warmly across generations as "Pops," Armstrong transformed the landscape of American music through his genius as a trumpeter and vocalist, infusing Black artistic tradition with unmatched joy, innovation, and depth.
As the nation reflects on its 250th anniversary, Armstrong’s legacy lives on—not as a distant historical icon, but as a vibrant thread connecting artists, neighborhoods, and creative energy from coast to coast.
To commemorate his birthday, the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation has launched a national radio campaign featuring reflections from contemporary leaders in the music community, including trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, and radio announcers across the country. Their voices highlight how Armstrong’s humor, brilliance, and humanity continue to guide and inspire musicians working today.
