Bringing History to the Stage: Michael Anthony Tatmon Embodies Thurgood Marshall at Theatre Row
Directed by Dr. Prodan Dimov, the 90-minute production traces Marshall’s journey from a young lawyer dismantling legal segregation to his landmark tenure on the Supreme Court.
For actor and storyteller Michael Anthony Tatmon, stepping into the shoes of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall is far more than a theatrical exercise—it is a living conversation with history. On Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Tatmon brings George Stevens Jr.’s acclaimed solo play, THURGOOD, to Theatre Row in New York City for a one-night-only engagement as part of the United Solo Theatre Festival.

Rather than presenting history from a distant pedestal, Tatmon’s performance leans into Marshall’s humor, moral clarity, and everyday humanity, inviting audiences to reflect on the personal grit behind landmark civil rights victories.

The evening also marks the launch of the THURGOOD Equal Justice Tour and the Thurgood Initiative, an effort founded by Tatmon’s production company, In Living Colored. The initiative pairs live performances with workshops, student dialogues, and civic discussions in schools and community spaces across the country. As Tatmon reflects, "Justice is not simply a chapter in our history—it is a responsibility we inherit. Through the life of Thurgood Marshall, we invite audiences to remember where we've been, understand where we are, and imagine where we can go together."
