Thai James is Redefining Who Belongs in Yoga
Melissa Rose Cooper sits down with Thai James to explore his 20-year journey on the yoga mat.
For two decades, Thai James navigated the physical demands of movement—first through dance, and later on the yoga mat. But where dance pushed for constant precision, strength, and an endless pursuit of perfection, yoga offered something fundamentally different: a space to show up exactly as he was.
Now a veteran instructor based in New York City, James is working to reshape how wellness spaces are built and who they serve. His mission is straightforward: ensuring that the Black community and people from all backgrounds feel genuinely seen, heard, and welcomed in places that have historically felt exclusive.
Learning to Listen
From neighborhood studios across New York to retreat spaces in Bali, James teaches students to shift their focus away from external standards and tune into their own bodies. His approach centers on unlearning the rigid ideals often attached to the wellness industry, grounding his practice in a simple truth—everybody belongs on the mat.
By cultivating self-awareness over performance, James is helping build a global community grounded in healing, body acceptance, and authentic belonging.
